OCEAN Contemporary ©
is a collaborative, non-profit research and exhibition project whose aim is to stimulate contemplation and responsibility through the medium of contemporary art. International artists will present pieces with a focus on the Ocean and the many problems we have in inflicted upon it.
The project follows on the objectives of various national and international strategies within the UN Decade on Biodiversity (2011-2020) and the recent UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development to prevent the fast dwindling biodiversity of our planet and to preserve it for the future.
The ocean is home to the elixir of life and the cradle of evolution that began about 3.5 billion years ago. Salt water covers 71% of the earth’s surface, roughly 85% of the plant life on Earth is in the ocean, 70% of the oxygen we breath is created by marine plant-life, it contains vast quantities of food, raw materials and energy. The ocean combines several superlatives: it is the oldest, largest, most dangerous, most threatened and most important habitat on earth.
OCEAN Contemporary wants to highlight these issues to both those interested in art and in particular to the broader public. By promoting contemporary art with Oceanic and Nautical themes we bring an eclectic array of pensive concepts to the public eye.
The conservation and protection of biological diversity on our “Blue Planet” is at the forefront of the two recent UN initiatives and our priorities as a species. In the desired cooperation with various partners OCEAN Contemporary© wants to achieve its objectives and contribute to a sustainable, psychological change in today’s ‘disposable’ society.
